great white happened last thursday in sonoma county. a kayaker was attacked recently off the coast ofd san mateo county. and last week a great white shark was spotted near a beach in pacifica. that's where nbc bay area's monte francis is now with the story. monte? >> reporter: well, diane, good evening. there was a big crowd here at the beach today, and hundreds of right now at 11:00 not only people are expected to be here tomorrow for labor day. for the victims of that killing for the most part we found that rampage in the east bay last these recent shark sightings are week but also for the suspected not keeping people out of the killer. the last then you want to water. as the sun set, the surf was hear before going to the beach -- shark sightings. just too much to resist on this just in time for the labor day holiday weekend for many at holiday. plus, your holiday forecast. linda mar beach in pacifica. and a change is just around the both novice and expert surfers corner. the news starts right now. well aware of what could be lurking just beneath them, just yards away. >> i know there are sharks around, but the likelihood of someone actually getting attacked is very small. so i'm not too scared. good evening. i'm diane dwyer. >> reporter: last week a surfer called this video of a fin on this labor day weekend belonging to what witnesses thousands of people are enjoying claim was a large great white the long weekend at the beach, shark feeding on a sea lion just of course. but two recent sightings of great white sharks in the bay 200 yards from the beach.

area as well as a close >> this thing obviously was feeding here. encounter a few weeks ago has so you never know if it will come back or not. some people a little on edge. the most recent sighting of a and my whole mindset is okay, just wait a while. >> reporter: at a beach near bodega bay last thursday witnesses reported a similar sighting, a great white also eating a sea lion. and a few weeks ago a shark went after a kayak in san mateo county. the man inside the kayak was not hurt. the assistant curator at the aquarium of the bay in san francisco told us shark sightings are common in the bay area this time of year. in fact, the large seven-gill shark on display at the aquarium was caught last month near alcatraz. but he says shark attacks on humans are rare. >> obviously, there have been documented cases of shark attacks. but again, at the same time there are also statistics that will say you're more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to be, you know, bitten by a shark. >> reporter: experts also say many varieties of sharks visit the northern california coast. particularly between august and

december. >> it's not uncommon for them to come into the bay, particularly right underneath the golden gate bridge into the mouth of the bay. they will come in there to feed off sea lions. >> reporter: and experts admit there have been more sightings of great white sharks this summer than usual. they say that should be a reminder to anyone who goes into the water this labor day weekend to be careful. live in pacifica tonight, monte francis, nbc bay area news. >> all right. thank you, monte. and you might need to crank up the ac a little bit. it is getting warmer and just in time for the last holiday of the summer. meteorologist craig herrera's here with a quick look for us. hi, craig. >> hi, diane. we had some 90s out there today. and today was just a brief preview of what's to come tomorrow. 90 in livermore, 80s across most bay locations and 90 in sonoma. as we go through the evening hours, there is not a lot of fog. 58 in san francisco, 70 in livermore and 70 in concord. just after 11:00 p.m. so we've still got some warm weather out there. what we have right now is the fog and you can see by 10:00

p.m. there's little patches starting to form by monterey bay but closer to the bay area not a whole lot 37 winds coming out of the north pushing a lot of fog down south most of that confined to monterey bay 4:00 a.m. tomorrow takes us to 8:00 a.m. and still not much in the way of fog so you know when we don't have that fog in the morning hours we're really going to start to warm back up. this is the satellite. there's a big ridge of high pressure right about here. those off winds are coming in tomorrow. look at, that 70s, 80s, and 90s on the forecast. i'll pinpoint it city by city as we go through the main forecast in just a couple of minutes. back foup. >> sounds lovely. thank you, greg. dozens of people gathered in the east bay tonight to hont lives of four people who were killed last week in a violent chain of events. but what's also interesting is that people also had a message for the suspect's family. nbc bay area's kimberly terry is in hercules with more for us. kimberly? >> reporter: there were about 75 people here tonight and each one of them seemed affected by the recent violence. at tonight's vigil there were prayers not just for the victims but also for their alleged assailant.

a vigil sunday night drew people from all over contra costa county, some who knew the murder victim. >> she's a very devoted mother. >> reporter: others who just want to support the family. >> it's heartbreaking. it's very heartbreaking. >> reporter: song, prayer, and five candles lit to remember the lives lost, one for each of the four victims, one for the man accused of taking their lives. >> we're not judgmental. we're not here to judge people for what they have done. we're here to promote the peacefulness within our community. >> he loved deeply, and his life was complex for him, and he just cracked. and that doesn't take him a bad person. >> reporter: ephraim valdemaro was shot and killed by chp officers last tuesday after a high-speed chase. inside his car police found

46-year-old cindy tran strangled to death. police are also linking him to the murder of 73-year-old ricardo sa las, who was found beaten to death in the house where he rented a room from tran. police say the two ooh two victims were found dead at a vallejo home. rumors of a lo-- a statement fr ranging in age from 13 to 21 was read on their behalf. >> we now realize how precious and short and fragile life really is. so appreciate the ones you love because you never know when they'll be taken away. we truly love our mom with all our hearts, and we know she's looking over us at this very moment. >> reporter: a memorial fund has been set up for tran's sons.

and if you'd like to contribute you can go to any wells fargo bank and just mention the cindy tran memorial fund. live in hercules, kimberly terry, nbc bay area news. >> all right. thank you, kimberly. and for a third straight day police and volunteers searched a landfill in the east bay city of pittsburg for the body of a missing man. if his body's found it would likely be the fifth victim of that murder rampage kimberly just reported. the search at the landfill is expected to begin again tomorrow morning. a livermore man is behind bars tonight after police say he stabbed his son 11 times early this morning. investigators say 48-year-old gary gomez was on a late-night fishing trip with his wife, 14-year-old sorngs an, and two son's friends when an argument broke out between father and son. the two got into a fistfight but then gomez allegedly pulled out his fishing knife and started stabbing his son. he also allegedly stabbed his wife in the hand when she tried

to stop the fight. the boy is expected to survive. in san francisco lawmakers are considering a proposal to increase taxes on alcohol. on tuesday the board of supervisors is set to vote on a plan that would place a fee on alcohol distributors. the plan would add a couple of cents to the equivalent of a bottle of beer, glass of wine or well drink. the idea is to cover some $17 million in unreimbursed health care costs related to alcohol abuse. the fee would apply to wholesalers who sell alcohol in san francisco. critics say the cost will be passed on to consumers, which will hurt business. the man accused of shooting a fremont officer and then trying to flee to mexico is due in court this week. 20-year-old andrew barientes is scheduled to be formally charged in an oakland court on tuesday. police say he shot todd young several times in oakland last friday when young tried to arrest him. 24 hours later he was arrested just 30 feet from the mexican border after investigators tracked him through his cell

phone. he told police he did not know the man he shot was a police officer. young was in plain clothes the day of the shooting. he's now recovering from a string of surgeries. labor day traditionally marks the start of the campaign season, and democratic candidate for governor jerry brown is set to start advertising and canvassing the state tomorrow. he's scheduled to make appearances in los angeles, sacramento, and alameda, and his rival, meg whitman, she has no public events tomorrow. meantime, a few members of the california chamber of commerce are stepping down after the board voted to endorse whitman. the community college chancellor who resigned on friday called the endorsement destructive to the chamber's core mission. the president of the university of california system, mark udoff, also left the board. he said that his position in education prevents him from taking political sides. coming up next at 11:00, the president's poll numbers are sliding and now democrats are turning to another person in the white house for help. there she is. could the move pay off for

president obama returned to the white house today after two days at camp david, and republicans sensed victory in november and spent the day attacking democrats on the sunday news talk shows. the number one issue -- the economy. and with growth still sluggish

and the jobless rate high, democrats are in danger of losing many seats. the president plans to do his part by traveling to several states this week to sell his party's plan to create jobs and get the economy moving again. republicans say the trip is more about politics than action. and while president obama's ramping up his efforts to keep democratic control of congress, many candidates are actually looking for a helping hand from his wife. nbc's mike guerra reports. >> may god bless the ship and all who sail in her. >> reporter: when it comes to poll ratings, michelle obama truly is the president's better half. she has remained consistently more popular than her husband, in part by staying above the partisan from a and taking up non-partisan causes as a champion for military families and a leader in the fight against childhood obesity. but now mrs. obama is set to raise her political profile. facing the prospect of massive losses in november, congressional democrats have issued a distress call.

send us michelle. at first their pleas were rebuffed. but with prospects getting worst by the day they asked again, and this time the answer was yes. details are still up in the air. but aides stress mrs. obama will not go on the attack. >> the risk is that she could be seen as polarizing and partisan, and that could hurt her because she's tried so hard to remain above the fray in advocating for her causes. so she doesn't want to get down into the campaign muck. >> reporter: but whether her edge is soft or hard, mrs. obama is not immune to criticism. she took hits for her trip with daughter sasha to a posh spanish resort this summer. even a series of cultural events in the white house east room, including a new dance series to begin this week, have been labeled elitist by republicans. but this fall a popular mrs. obama will add to her two roles of mother and advocate with a third. >> with your help and unwavering

support -- >> reporter: political campaigner. >> the american people have looked at her. they like her a great deal. in fact, you know, my guess is the president would swap favorable ratings with his wife in a heartbeat. >> so there you go. there are more questions tonight regarding craigslist's sudden decision to remove its adult services section. outside the home office of craigslist in san francisco anonymous homemade pursers reading censored and legalized craigslist hung on the gate. just who put them there is unknown as is why they haven't been taken down. officials from craigslist still aren't talking but critics of the adult services category are talking. >> we are thankful that craigslist has shut down its adult services section, and we believe that that act really lessens the suffering of so many girls who are being sold for sex. >> last month attorneys general in 17 states wrote a joint letter to craigslist demanding they remove the adult services

but tomorrow looks good, right? we'll start with the golden gate bridge, and visibility not an issue. not much in the way of fog out there. just a nice evening. pleasant, in fact. 58 right now in san francisco. 68 now in livermore. we've dromd a couple of degrees on the east side of the bay. concord at 67. lots of lower 60s in the south. dropped into the 50s in the north end of the bay. overnight lows in the north end of the bay will be in the low to mid 40s due to the lack of the cloud cover. temperatures today and right now are about two to almost seven degrees warmer than we were at this time yesterday. overnight lows tomorrow morning when you weighing wake up in the north end of the bay you will have some 40s. we won't have the cloud cover to keep you warm. most of the fog is going to be right over monterey bay and places south of there. here is the satellite. only the pacific northwest is getting the cloud cover. we've got this ridge of high pressure that has been with us. it gave us those northwest winds today. cleared the fog out, gave us plenty of sunshine. tomorrow that ridge nudges over just a bit. those winds come more out of the northeast. and as a result not much in the way of fog. beaches are in the mid 70s.

bayside the mid 80s. and inland spots into the 90s. what i want to point out is this is not going to last very long. tomorrow we warm up. some cold air drops in quickly. tuesday and wednesday that fog is going to get very thick during the overnight hours through the morning hours. it gets blown right into the bay area. so much cooler. 60s and 70s for highs. in the warmest spots on wednesday. statewide. 78 in los angeles. 105 in palm springs. close to 100 degrees for the central valley. the central coast in the 70s. and just a nice day all around the entire state really. sacramento at 96. and you get some 70s for south lake tahoe and up and through reno closer to 80 degrees. sunrise 6:44. we talked about this yesterday. we'll see the sunrise again tomorrow with the lack of cloud cover. sunset 7:31. 94 livermore. concord o'rinda -- lots of 90s everywhere. here's the seven-day forecast. enjoy it. have a great day. be safe there.

baby flamingos at the san francisco zoo. here's a look at three chicks that have hatched over the last couple of day, and there are more than a dozen eggs left waiting to be hatched. curators say it's very hard to get flamingos to mate in captivity but this year it appears they found a strategy that worked quite well. >> they brought in a new group of ten flamingos from phoenix, and we actually gave them ten of ours to try to excite the group, and it seems to have worked. the pairings of a couple of our

birds with theirs have produced chicks this year. >> the new chicks are so popular the two male flamingos are squabbling now over one of the babies, both trying to feed the baby all the time, and the poor thing is apparently stuffed. that's all according to zoo officials, who are watching what's going on. to celebrate the new arrivals the zoo is givingpesho w wear pink a dollar off the admission price this holiday weekend. we'll be right back.

the u.s. postal service released a stamp honoring the humanitarian work of mother theresa today, and it's creating a little bit of controversy. mother theresa won the 1979 mobil peace prize. her half century of humanitarian service. and the postal service says it is honoring that service not her

religion. but an atheist group is not happy and is urging opponents to engage in a letter-writing campaign to remind the government of the concept of separation of church and state. she was declared an honorary u.s. citizen by joint resolution of congress, by the way, in 1996. and one of the biggest names in sharks history wants to come back to the team. also, more drama from the giants. and what it means in the playoff race. raj mathai joins us next with "sports sunday."
